1990 - 1991

My first full season at Ayresome Park following the Mighty Boro!

Colin Todd made a few signings - John Wark (who only played for us for a season) along with John Hendrie and Robbie Mustoe who went on to become club legends.

Boro were always in or around the playoff picture, but ultimately lost out to Notts County over two legs.

This was the season that John Hendrie scored one of the best goals I'd seen at Ayresome. It was against Millwall on Saturday 13th October 1990 and he ran virtually the full length of the pitch, leaving defenders in his wake to put the ball passed Brian Horne.

I thought it was time to give being an away fan a go, so in January 1991 I hopped on the Boro Travel Club bus for the "short" trip to Cambridge United. It was an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, and Boro lost 2-0.

A couple more away games were attended, including the play-off semi-final defeat at Meadow Lane. I drove to Nottingham and there was a bit of trouble after the match - in fact I've never seen a scarft being pulled back into a car so fast before, or since!

The kits that season were incredible. Made again in-house by Skill, they were sponsored by the Evening Gazette and were carried over to the 1991 - 92 season.

Colin Todd obvioulsy wasn't happy about missing out on promotion to the First Division and proposed radical changes by putting 11 players on the transfer list. This didn't go down too well, and Todd was sacked shortly after.

So my first managerial change was about to happen, along side the fact I thought it was time to take the plunge and buy a season ticket.
