It was an FA Cup Third Round tie against Southampton at Ayresome Park, and Boro lost 3-1. Willie Maddren was manager. Sadly, Boro were on a downward spiral at this point. Maddren was sacked less than a month after this game, with Bruce Rioch taking over.
It pains me to think that my next Boro game was after Rioch left the club four years later, and I never saw one of his teams - and an exciting period in the club's history - live.
My 1985 - 86 Boro XI is an easy one to pick, as it's the only one I watched!
I'm amazed I still had the matchday magazine, and was even more surprised to find the ticket stub along with it. A match ticket and programme for less than four quid!
